The ridge across the valley, between us and the more distant skylined ridge, is the Pacific Crest proper, and it is the route that the Washoe helpfully directed Capt. John C. Freemont, ‘the Pathfinder’, to use when he was desperately trying to cross the Sierra to ‘civilization’ in February of 1844, with all his men and horses, carrying crates of specimens for President Jefferson’s budding museum. They had to abandon the cannon on the eastside though.
