Wolf Lichen (locally known as Staghorn) Letharia vulpina, grows on the trunks of these Red Firs, the snow high tide level marked where the deep snow pack has historically frozen onto the slow growing lichen, then stripped them off the bark as the snow pack settles in the spring. Fun to imagine the snow that deep, and shows how far we have to go.
