January high pressure doldrums, go figure. One relentlessly stinking lovely day after the next. Time to go looking for corn skiing.
South faces looking pretty cooked, doesnt bode so well for me climbing to the crest to check the backside blind. Just showing up is one of the keys to success out here, trusting the process, watching temps and winds and pack. Corn is a liminal thing, the state right before the snow just melts away entirely. It’s fun trying to work that margin, to test your modeling, the map of your ski habitat. Keeps you honest. You just have to be resigned to getting skunked sometimes, that’s part of the process too. You just take it with grace, and enjoy the walk. If you calibrate your expectations consistently down a notch, you’re hardly ever disappointed, as long as you still show up.
