The low notch in the shadow of the Pacific Crest projected onto the Carson Range across the Lake, is likely the pass from the head of McKinney Creek drainage west into the Miller Creek, the only pass of comparably low elevation for about twenty miles in either direction, used for thousands of years as a trade route for the Washoe and Nisenan tribes on either side, and now the path of the Rubicon OHV road.
